David Alexander is an emerging digital artist based in Ottawa, Canada. His innovative work spans various mediums, showcasing a lifelong passion for creativity and artistic expression.
While David is self-taught and has no formal training, artistry runs in the family, and was encouraged from a young age. Notably, David’s grandmother received painting lessons from members of the Group of Seven while studying at Banff School of Fine Arts.
Beyond his visual artwork, David is also a musician who creates under the name qopoqop. His music, with its unique and experimental sound, has garnered over 1.5 million streams and reached listeners in 176 countries. Despite the playful and whimsical name—qopoqop (pronounced "o poop" with the "q" being silent)—David’s music mirrors the same attention to detail and care that he pours into his visual art. His music has also gained recognition locally, with features on legendary campus radio station CKCU 93.1, and has received national radio show !Earshot Daily’s song of the day award.
David is determined to change the perception of digital art, aiming to elevate its status and show that digital creations can be just as meticulous, thoughtful, and emotionally engaging as traditional forms - and more relevant to our current times. While he is not opposed to the use of artificial intelligence in art, he currently does not use any AI in his works, preferring to create with popular software like Paint.net, GIMP, and Inkscape.
My latest collection of works is a reflection of my love for the country that inspired them —a celebration of Canada’s vast and diverse geography, and culture.
In a time when tensions with our southern neighbors are rising, I feel it’s more important than ever to focus on what unites us as Canadians. These works are intended to stir a quiet pride, to remind us of the strength in our diversity and the resilience in our shared values. I hope that viewers will feel a renewed appreciation, and sense of belonging - not just to the land, but to each other – while non-Canadian viewers gain a sense of appreciation for our beautiful and diverse country.
